If you are an avid photographer and a diver or swimmer you have probably considered taking your camera underwater. Combining these two passions can be rewarding. Nowadays there is no need to purchase a specially designed underwater camera. There are sophisticated camera housings that allow you to use the camera you already have and are familiar with for your underwater photography. Canon produces their own housings and there are also other manufacturers that produce housings for Canon digital cameras.

Become familiar with the way the camera feels within its housing. Although you are familiar with the use of your camera it is very different using it underwater in its waterproof housing. Check how the camera feels and if the buoyancy is right. You need neutral or slightly negative buoyancy for the best handling. Some housings have added weights to achieve this.

You will also need to ensure the batteries are good for the length of time you are going to be underwater. You cannot change the batteries underwater and you do not want to miss the perfect shot because you forgot to put in fully charged batteries.

Also underexpose rather than overexpose when taking pictures underwater It is much easier to successfully edit an underexposed photo and bring out the colours than an overexposed one. This is always a good thing to do but underwater many divers use strong strobe lights which may easily lead to overexposure.
