canonsd870.jpgThe Canon ELPH SD870 digital camera is a good looking camera with an elegant finish and bold lines. The compact case has a retracting lens and is small enough to fit in your pocket. With the latest 8.0 Mega pixel resolution optical image stabiliser and 3.8x optical zooming it covers a wide angle to a moderate telephoto range. The fully automatic exposure can be adjusted manually if required to handle difficult lighting situations. Twelve scene modes make the camera suitable for beginners and a long exposure mode allows an exposure time up to 15 seconds. There is no optical viewfinder but the large 3 inch LCD is more than adequate.

For good performance in dim lighting the Canon SD870 Digital Camera has a wide ISO range from 80 to 1600. The camera is equipped with PictBridge capability to allow easy integration with printers without the need for a computer.

The Canon SD870 is the mid range camera in the high end ELPH line and is specialised for wide angle photography. The lens extends in 1 second and improvements over the previous wide angle model, the SD800, include upgrading from 7.1 to 800 megapixels and inbcreasing the LCD screenfrom 2.5 to 3 inches. The lens is a 28-105mm lens with a minimum aperture of f/5.8 at the telephoto end and f/2.8 at the wide end. The camera is smaller than the SD800 but slightly heavier and lacking an optical viewfinder.

Features

The lens has an anti-scratch, anti-glare coating but I would recommend the use of a camera case regardless. The handsome chrome finish around the lens looks fine when new but is easily scratched. The model with black matt finish around the lens would probably keep its looks much longer.

Optical image stabilization

No need to worry about camera shake with the optical image stabilisatio which works perfectly even at maximum telephoto.

Face Detection & Red Eye Correction

Face detection automatically sets the exposure and focus point for the faces of the subjects and adjusts the flash correctly to avoid the problem of over or under exposure of faces. Red eye correction operates automatically but there is a back up manual adjustment that can be done in playback mode.

DIGIC Image Processing

Canon’s proprietary Digital Image Processing give superior image quality while allowing long battery life.

Overall

A good mid range digital camera with a superior wide angle imaging ability.
